    Hello everyone,

I’m a long-time Samsung user feeling quite frustrated lately.

I’ve always trusted Samsung phones and tablets for their quality and durability. But my last few devices have been disappointing, I can’t update or modify them anymore. I’ve since switched to other brands that allow easier upgrades and customization.

Here are the devices I’m talking about:

    • Galaxy Tab A7 (T290) – Updated to bootloader version X5, now permanently locked.
    • Galaxy A52 5G (SM-A526U) – Two units, both North American variants with locked bootloaders.

Samsung has blocked bootloader unlocking on the A526U model, and I haven’t found any way to install a custom ROM, GSI, or privacy-focused OS like /e/OS.

These devices are no longer in daily use, and I’d love to repurpose them maybe donate them to students or journalists who need better privacy and security.

    So, I’m asking:

    • Has anyone found a way to install Android 15 or later, a GSI, or a project like /e/OS on these models?
    • If not, is Magisk rooting still possible? Ironically, rooting might be the only way to make them more secure and remove bloatware.

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!
    F.

    Totally get your frustration.

For the A526U, OEM unlock is blocked by default on most North American units, so no root, no custom ROMs, nothing. As for the T290, if OEM unlock was disabled by a firmware update, you might be able to downgrade to an older version with the same X5 binary, but you can’t go lower than that (like X4). If OEM unlock doesn’t come back after that, it’s game over for modding.

Sad to say, both devices are pretty much stuck unless Samsung changes its stance.
