Hey, is there any way to install Android 14 or 15 on the Samsung Galaxy A9 2018? Right now I’m using Android 12 Pixel Experience Plus by Ponces. I saw a blog on magiskzip.com about upgrading, but it mentioned that other ROMs have camera issues. Just wondering if it’s worth trying.

Yes, it’s technically possible to install Android 14 or even Android 15 on your Galaxy A9 2018 using a GSI ROM. But there’s a catch, the camera won’t work properly.

The issue is with the camera API. Your phone uses HAL1, but newer Android versions (12 and above) need HAL2 for the camera to function correctly. Since Galaxy A9 2018 doesn’t support HAL2, most GSI ROMs will have broken or non-working cameras.

To fix this, you’d need a custom vendor image that supports HAL2 but unfortunately, that’s not available for this device at this time. So yes, you can upgrade, but you’ll lose camera functionality unless someone builds a custom vendor for it.

Oh okay… but why isn’t a custom vendor available for Galaxy A9 2018? Can’t someone just make it?

The reason a custom vendor isn’t available is because it takes a lot of work to build one. You need to have the right tools, a powerful PC (or rent a VPS server), and knowledge of Android development. Most developers focus on newer or more popular phones, so older models like the Galaxy A9 2018 don’t get much attention.

But if you’re interested, you can actually build it yourself! Everything you need like the device tree, custom kernel, and custom recovery is available on GitHub. A good place to start is checking out the work by @thongass000 on GitHub. He’s shared some great resources for Galaxy A9 2018.

So yeah, it’s possible just not easy.
